Whenever a major awards ceremony nears, you'll find an outcry for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and delight the passions of fans with niche passions.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
- Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
- Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
- Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
